Do Progressive Products Include Conflict Minerals?
Conflict minerals are minerals mined in conditions of armed conflict and human rights abuses, notably in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo and adjoining countries. The most commonly mined minerals are columbite-tantalite, cassiterite, wolframite, and gold ore – which are refined into tantalum, tin, tungsten, and gold – and together known as “Conflict Minerals”.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued final rules for compliance with Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act on August 22, 2012. The Act requires publicly traded companies that file reports with the SEC under the Exchange Act to submit annually a report on the presence of conflict minerals that are necessary to the functionality or production of a product that they manufacture or contract to be manufactured.
Progressive recognizes and supports the Conflict Minerals rule mandated by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. This rule refers to the SEC’s efforts to address human rights abuses in the mining industry in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo and adjoining countries.
Progressive is requiring all its suppliers to:
(1) Determine which of the products or inputs supplied to Progressive incorporate one or more of the Conflict Minerals regardless of country of origin;
(2) Identify supply chains associated with those products or inputs; and
(3) Engage suppliers to identify the smelters, refiners, and banks used in the supply chain to process the Conflict Minerals and validate the origin of minerals/metals that are recycled, scrap, and original extraction.
All Progressive suppliers are to have documentation supporting the country of origin for any Conflict Minerals incorporated into any Progressive product, if applicable.
