Product Development Manager


Kent, WA


Responsible for successfully leading product development planning and execution activities to launch branded products to support the Company’s business strategy including leading designers through the creative and technical process from research, concepting, proving of concepts and product specifications.  Champion team collaboration to make effective decisions and meet deadlines in all phases of the product development process.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Travel international and domestic (30%) as required.

Interaction and environment

Reports To:  VP Product Development & Sourcing

Work areas are inside in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise.  Position involves occasional extended work hours and travel to multiple worksites.  Some international travel overseas may be required to work with vendors.  Additional travel may be required to attend trade shows (both domestic and international).

Supervises:   Industrial Designers and external contract design or engineering resources.  


  • Excellent written and oral communication skill; ability to communicate effectively and project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person and over the phone.
  • Solid word processing and computer database skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office software, SolidWorks 3D Modeling, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe PhotoShop.
  • Firm understanding of manufacturing processes, design and development processes and timelines.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with individuals and groups at all organization levels; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong negotiation skills with the ability to develop solid relationships with vendors and sales force.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Industrial Design, Engineering, or equivalent related experience. 
  • At least five (5) years of consumer product development related experience within a medium-sized consumer-durable products or retail company.
  • Preferred previous supervisory experience of direct reports.
  • Must possess a valid Washington state driver’s license.

Essential Functions

Product Management

  1. Lead the product development process and champion team collaboration to successfully execute product launches to meet deadlines in all phases of the product development process and achieve product targets with effective decision making while incorporating Sales and Marketing feedback.
  2. Lead the development of product design briefs in collaboration with Marketing and Industrial Designers to incorporate the opportunity, customer/sales feedback, potential features, competitive landscape, research/validating the consumer problem.  Incorporate ROI analysis with Supply Chain to understand constraints to successfully guide product development execution with designers.
  3.  Collaborate with Sales & Marketing to understand competitor landscape to best position a product launch for placement.  Collaboration includes but not limited to testing competitor products, identifying features, reviewing patents, reviewing critical stage gates during concepting and finalizing design to ensure validation of opportunities.
  4. Work closely with Industrial Designers and other team members to test and approve new products; ensuring each product launched maintains the appropriate quality standard.
  5. Initiate packaging design briefs to hand off to Marketing with key product information used in the development of product packaging or other product related literature to clearly communicate features and benefits.
  6. Collaborate with team members concerning product set-up, ordering, inventory and product quality issues, as well as related product information.

Industrial Design

  1. Lead and manage Industrial Designers (ID) to deliver final products meeting design brief criterias.  Including but not limited to leading brainstorming sessions to generate new product ideas and concepting, proving of concepts, tooling form & CAD approval, specifications, material selection to meet target price points and technical trouble-shooting of products for approval handed off for production.
  2. Oversee ID productivity to make sure projects are tracked in Clarizen and project priorities are managed appropriately to meet or improve speed to market. Delegate and manage ID workload utilizing internal and external design resources. Oversee ID resource alignment with projects and design process standards and documentation are maintained for product integrity of products launched. 
  3. Provide mentorship to ID related to industry/design/patent/technical & manufacturing knowledge to build expertise and professional development for staff .
  4. Review and approve design briefs with emphasis on ROI of product development resources and development viability of the item to maximize profitability for the Company.
  5. Coordinate with the Quality Manager for all QA related issues that require product modifications, improvements and finalize any needed product updates in a timely manner.  Work with the Quality Manager to establish acceptable quality expectations and performance criteria for new products that meet company and industry standards. 
  6. Develop and maintain relationships with vendors, ProCorp and other 3rd party resources to improve product development collaboration.  Oversee that ID receive the needed support, including design capabilities of key vendors to enhance and supplement internal design efforts.  Mentor ID on building effective working relationships with suppliers and other 3rd party resources.
  7. Manage and maintain design language for PIC branded products resulting in visual consistency across PIC products to support strengthening brand recognition as well as managing the execution of brand consistency for private label products.
